If it's not hazardous — we'll haul it
JYR Junk Removal takes just about everything from your San Francisco home, office, or job site. Here's the full list.
✅ What we take
❌ What we can't take
For your safety and ours, we can't transport hazardous materials. Many can be dropped off for free at SF Household Hazardous Waste collection.
Furniture removal in San Francisco
JYR's San Francisco junk removal crews handle every kind of household furniture: sofas, sectionals, sleeper sofas, loveseats, recliners, accent chairs, dining tables, dining chairs, bar stools, coffee tables, end tables, bookshelves, entertainment centers, TV stands, beds and bed frames (twin through California king), dressers, nightstands, armoires, wardrobes, vanities, mirror frames, office desks, ergonomic chairs, conference tables, filing cabinets, patio furniture, outdoor sectionals, fire-pit tables, and built-ins removed during remodels. Reusable furniture is donated to Bay Area nonprofits including Habitat for Humanity ReStore, St. Vincent de Paul, Goodwill, and Salvation Army whenever possible. Furniture too damaged to donate is broken down and routed to clean-wood and scrap-metal recycling streams. Single-piece furniture removal starts at $129; full living-room sets and bedroom suites are priced by volume in 1/8 truck increments.
Appliance removal and freon-certified disposal
Refrigerators, freezers, chest freezers, wine coolers, mini-fridges, top-load and front-load washers, gas and electric dryers, dishwashers, gas and electric ranges, wall ovens, cooktops, range hoods, microwaves, gas and electric water heaters, trash compactors, garbage disposals, window AC units, portable AC units, and dehumidifiers all get hauled by JYR. Refrigeration units contain regulated refrigerants (R-134a, R-600a, and legacy R-12) that must be recovered before disposal under EPA and California rules. We partner with EPA-compliant Bay Area appliance recyclers who reclaim the refrigerant, drain compressor oil, and shred the steel and copper for reuse. Appliance pickup starts at $109 all-in including disconnect of water and electrical lines (gas lines must be capped by a licensed plumber).
E-waste and electronics disposal
California's Electronic Waste Recycling Act and the Universal Waste Rule make it illegal to throw most electronics in the regular trash. JYR routes every piece of e-waste we collect to R2 (Responsible Recycling) and e-Stewards certified processors in California. We accept flat-screen TVs (LCD, LED, OLED, plasma), CRT TVs and monitors, computer monitors, desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, servers, network switches, routers, modems, UPS battery backups, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, projectors, gaming consoles, stereo equipment, lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries, fluorescent tubes, CFL bulbs, cables, chargers, and circuit boards. For businesses, we offer chain-of-custody manifests, asset serialization on request, and NIST 800-88 compliant data destruction with a Certificate of Destruction — essential for HIPAA, SOC 2, GLBA, and FERPA compliance.
Mattress and box-spring recycling
Under California's Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act, every mattress JYR collects is delivered to a certified recycling facility under the Bye Bye Mattress program. About 75% of a typical mattress is recyclable: steel springs become scrap, foam is shredded for carpet pad, fiber goes to insulation, and wood frames are chipped for mulch. We take every size — twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king, crib — and every type — innerspring, memory foam, latex, hybrid, pillow-top, futon, and adjustable-base mattresses. Box springs, foundations, bunkie boards, bed frames, platform beds, headboards, and footboards are all included. Single mattress disposal starts at $89.
Yard waste and green debris hauling
Tree branches and limbs, palm fronds, ivy and bamboo, hedge trimmings, leaves, sod and turf, topsoil, mulch, gravel, decorative river rock, broken planters and pots, raised-bed lumber, fence panels and posts, deck boards, pergola pieces, garden hoses, broken patio furniture, rusted grills, and old playground equipment — if it came from your yard, JYR will take it. Loose green waste is delivered to certified Bay Area composting facilities where it becomes mulch and soil amendments. Pressure-treated and painted lumber is kept separate and routed to appropriate disposal streams, never composted. Storm cleanup after winter weather is one of our busiest seasons — same-day appointments are usually available if you call first thing in the morning.
Construction and remodel debris removal
Drywall and plaster, lath, lumber and framing offcuts, plywood, OSB, hardwood and laminate flooring, vinyl and LVP, ceramic and porcelain tile, broken concrete and stucco, brick, roofing shingles, insulation, demolished cabinetry, countertops (laminate, quartz, granite), bathtubs, toilets, sinks, vanities, light fixtures, and old appliances pulled during a remodel — JYR handles all of it under San Francisco's Construction & Demolition Debris Recovery Ordinance. We deliver C&D loads to approved Bay Area processors and provide weight tickets and diversion reports for SF Building Department close-out and LEED documentation. For active job sites, we offer standing weekly pickups, dedicated dispatcher contacts, and net-30 invoicing — faster and cheaper than a roll-off dumpster for most SF remodels.
Specialty items: hot tubs, pianos, pool tables, and safes
JYR removes specialty items that most junk haulers won't touch. Hot tubs and spas are drained, disconnected, broken down on-site if needed, and removed from yards, decks, and side-yard locations from $499. Upright pianos start at $299; baby grand and concert grand pianos are priced by location and access. Pool tables (slate-bed and laminate) are disassembled on-site and removed. Safes up to 1,200 lbs are dollied out using specialty equipment. Other specialty hauls include exercise equipment (treadmills, ellipticals, weight benches, Pelotons, rowing machines), kayaks and paddleboards, surfboards, motorcycles (non-running), and large outdoor playsets and trampolines.
Hazardous waste — what we can't take and where to drop it
For the safety of our crews and to stay within California hauler regulations, JYR can't transport paint, solvents, oils, gasoline, asbestos, lead-based products, full propane and helium tanks, pool chemicals, household cleaning chemicals, pesticides, medical waste, sharps, ammunition, explosives, or wet/contaminated items. Most of these can be dropped off for free at the San Francisco Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility (Tunnel Avenue) for SF residents, or at the appropriate facility in your county for Bay Area residents. If you're not sure where to take something, ask us — we know the nearest drop-off for every Bay Area city we serve and we'll text you the address.
How JYR sorts, donates, and recycles every load
Up to 60% of every load JYR collects in San Francisco is diverted from the landfill — well above the city average. Our default workflow is donate, then recycle, then dispose, in that order. Reusable furniture, appliances, kitchenware, books, and clothing are routed to Bay Area nonprofits. E-waste goes to R2-certified processors. Mattresses go through Bye Bye Mattress. Clean wood, metal, and cardboard are sorted out at the transfer station. Hazardous items are flagged and you're given the nearest free drop-off address. We can provide a written disposal report, weight tickets, and donation receipts on request — useful for probate, real-estate transactions, corporate ESG reporting, and tax purposes.
